These last few years have in fact been tough for this Michigan economy. Too often the faces and families who are most affected by this recession are lost behind grim statistics. Behind every downsizing and layoff is in fact, a family. These are the people who today we are attempting to help. Our plan will capture $138 million in additional federal stimulus to help unemployed workers who enroll in a vocational or skill retraining program. This includes No Worker Left Behind. We will do this by bringing Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency in line with federal guidelines. Without these changes, Michigan stands to lose out on more than $138 million in worker retraining assistance as part of the stimulus package. These funds would provide benefits for workers in these retraining programs. No state funds would in fact be used, nor would employees be on the hook. I think that’s very important to know. These benefits will automatically provide, be provided to workers, who are laid off or downsized in an industry that is in fact shedding jobs. This will help residents enter a training program that prepares workers for re-entry into a high demand occupation, such as alternative energy, advanced manufacturing or life sciences. By training our workers for these 21st Century jobs we can diversify Michigan's economy, get our state back on the road to economic recovery and blunt the impact of future economic problems.
