LANSING -- As the largest and most populated city in the state of Michigan, Detroit sends 12 elected members to the Michigan House of Representatives every two years. With the many issues facing the city, including staving off financial crisis, problems of blight, and an ailing school district, this group of dedicated legislators felt it was imperative to form a strong coalition and unified voice in the Michigan House of Representatives.
The Detroit Caucus of the Michigan House of Representatives (DCMHR) was established at the beginning of the 2005 legislative session. The elected officers and members of the 2007-2008 Caucus are as follows:
Officers
Rep. Bert Johnson (Chairperson)
Rep. Coleman A. Young II (Vice Chairperson)
Rep. Shanelle Jackson (Secretary)
Rep. Virgil Smith (Policy Advisor)
Members
Rep. George Cushingberry Jr., Rep. Morris Hood, Rep. Gabe Leland, Rep. Bettie Cook Scott, Rep. LaMar Lemmons Jr., Rep. Marsha Cheeks, Rep. Edward Gaffney, and Rep. Steve Tobocman.
The next meeting is scheduled to take place next week, at which time the Caucus will lay out its agenda and various policy initiatives.
