Byrd on Tax Foreclosure Prevention Reform

Wednesday, August 21, 2019

LANSING — Today, state Rep. Wendell Byrd (D-Detroit) attended a ceremonial signing of his House Bill 4121 with Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. Now Public Act 35 of 2019, the new law extends the sunset on county treasurers entering into tax foreclosures avoidance agreements, allowing people who have fallen behind on their property taxes an opportunity to save their homes. In response, Rep. Byrd issued the following statement:

“I believe everyone deserves a second chance and I am pleased that Gov. Whitmer agrees. Making a mistake shouldn’t cost you your home and people who have fallen behind on their tax bills shouldn’t be forced out of their communities. Our communities thrive because of the people who live there, and this new law goes a long way toward making sure they stay intact.”
